Phoenix:
On emerging demands on various issues, like appointing more number of School Resource officers, and arming teachers, the lawmakers are taking steps ahead with their own school safety bill.
The School Safety bill which is proposed to be passed on the name of SB1519
Is expected to have power to stop the order, with regard to Severe Threat Order of Protection. A relative school administrator, or behavioral health professional, could be eligible to order a petition to get anybody check and verify, if they believed to be a harm to them self or any others.
After the evaluation, any fire arms could be taken over or seized.
Charles Heller told the Arizona Citizens Defense League that "The problem with the bill is it little to nothing for real security," she also expressed that, “it doesn’t address the issues, that if you really want to keep a bad actor out of the school, harden the school”
Heller felt that arming teachers could be a layer to make schools strict, so that could strengthen classrooms, but he is glad to see that there is no mention of background checks or bump stock bans in the proposed bill.
Heller commented that “Don’t look at the mechanism of injury, look at the person doing the evil”
The proposed bill is also expected to train the teachers, in suicide prevention
Another citizen, Katey McPherson said that “some times kids spend more time in the school than at home and they open up in different ways”
Kids of McPherson go to school in Chandler, she also started a non profit along with other moms called Project Connect 4
With an intention to look at the overall umbrella of mental health and wellness, said Mc Pherson
The original plan was called for $11 million for more school resource officers. That was cut down to $5.5million.
The bill is yet to be passed in the senate and then will be send to the house.
