Volunteer Orientation At Smoki MuseumHistory & Museums

The Smoki Museum will hold a Volunteer Orientation on 25 August 2015, for those who are interested in volunteering at the museum. Volunteers welcome visitors besides demonstrating how to use the hands-on area, where there is probability of visitors to try beading, grinding corn and more.

A news release issued by the museum said that, "Visitors may want to stop by the museum's Trading Post store, run by volunteers, where over 90 percent of the items sold are made by American Indians.”

"Thus supporting not only the museum, but the Native Artists."

Besides running the museum, volunteers research, plan and implement events and programs. The Indian Educations Series is one such program that runs on Thursdays from March through April 1-3 p.m. A free second Saturday lecture series is also conducted at 2 p.m. every month.

The consignment market that features Indian-made items, the annual Navajo Rug, Southwest décor from personal collections, and Art Auctions, Mata Ortiz pottery demonstration and sale, Dia de Los Muertos celebration, Native Indian dancers, food, jewelry and art shows are amongst other events.

According to the release, "Inside the unique museum building are wonderful permanent displays and exhibits of pottery, tools, clothing and baskets from several Southwestern cultures.”

"Special temporary exhibits are always brought in to increase our knowledge about the ancient and modern American Indian cultures that have been here for thousands of years," the release added.

The current exhibit that will close in October, features the modern approach to Lloyd "Kiva" New's art and textile designs. "Connections Northwest/Southwest: Paquime and the Pueblo World," will replace the current exhibit thatw ill showcase pottery and images from the original archaeological excavations of Casas Grandes, or "Paquime" in modern-day Mexico and will open on 17 October 2015 at 1 pm.
