England set a new world record on the fourth day of the Multan Test, continuing their good performance against Pakistan. On Thursday, Joe Root, the country's top Test batsman, shared a 454-run partnership with Harry Brooke to set an unprecedented record in world cricket. It was the first time since the introduction of the Test cricket format in 1877 that two batsmen combined to score 450 runs for the fourth wicket. The previous record was 449 by Australians Adam Voges and Thorne Marsh. They picked up their points against the West Indies in Hobart in 2015. The 454 partnership between Brooke and Root is the highest ever scored for a wicket by two Test cricketers away from home. The previous highest score was 451 between Australia and England at the Oval in 1934. Root and Brook also recorded the best partnership of any team for every wicket against Pakistan. But overall, the record for the best partnership in Test cricket is held by Mahla Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, who made 624 runs against South Africa in 2006.
Root appeared poised to threaten Brian Lara's 400-run total, but the England star was dismissed shortly after he and Brooke shared a world record fourth wicket. Root was dismissed for 262 by head coach Sir Salman, but his dismissal did not help stop England's success in this match. Earlier on Wednesday, Root reached a major milestone in his career when he overtook Cook to become England's top goalscorer. In a video about England Cricket Official. “I think when it's over I'll look back and be very proud, but I think what will stand out most is that we played as a team today. I’m looking forward to starting again tomorrow,” said Root scored over 20,000 runs in 350 internationals with 51 centuries and 108 half-centuries.
On that record-breaking day, Root not only overtook Cook as England's leading run-scorer in Test cricket, but also made him the fifth-highest run-scorer in the history of the format. Root has now overtaken cricketing greats Younis Khan, Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara and Mahla Jayawardene (who scored 34 Test centuries each) to become the sixth-highest century maker in Test history. The top scorer and century maker in Test cricket was Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 15,921 runs in 200 Tests and 51 centuries. Root is getting closer and closer to Tendulkar's record.
