Jonathan Toews scored a natural hat trick to snap a four-game pointless streak and guide the visiting Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-0 win over Edmonton on Wednesday night. The third time proved to be not so lucky for the Edmonton Oilers.
The Oilers won both meetings against the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks earlier this season, but Edmonton has lost five in a row and has only two wins in their last 15 games, both against Chicago
The Oilers defeated the Blackhawks 7-4 on Oct. 29 and 2-1 on Nov. 7. The Blackhawks haven't lost at Edmonton since Feb. 6, 2008, a streak of five games.
The unquestionable star of the show was Toews, who had not collected a point since scoring two goals and tallying a pair of assists in a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Thrashers on Nov. 6.
The Winnipeg native broke out of his slump in style, scoring the first three goals of the game. Toews has eight goals in 14 career games against Edmonton.
Despite giving up four goals, Nikolai Khabibulin had a solid outing for the Oilers, making 27 saves before being pulled at the start of the third period. Khabibulin has surrendered 22 goals in his last four starts — all losses.
By contrast, Chicago goalie Marty Turco had a pretty easy night, forced to make 18 stops to earn his first shutout of the season and 41st of his career.
The Oilers looked lifeless through the opening 20 minutes, allowing the Hawks to jump out to a 2-0 lead going into the intermission.
Toews fished out a rebound from under the skates of Khabibulin and slipped the puck through the legs of the Oilers goalie at 14:24.
Lady Luck shone on Toews late in the period when he scored on the power play as his centring pass from behind the net deflected off the skate of Oilers defenceman Tom Gilbert and eluded Khabibulin.
The Chicago forward completed his natural hat trick at 1:12 of the middle frame, taking a no-look pass from Patrick Kane and beating Khabibulin with a wrist shot from the slot.
Patrick Sharp made in 4-0 late in the second period with a short-handed goal, scooping up a loose puck in the neutral zone and undressing Khabibulin with a great deke.
The goal was Sharp's first in nine games.
After being outshot 31-12 through the first 40 minutes, the Oilers pulled Khabibulin at the start of the third period and replaced him with Devan Dubnyk.
It didn't take long for Chicago to get to Dubnyk, though. A mere 1:58 into the period, Bryan Bickell blasted a slapshot from the top of the circle past the glove of the Oilers' backup to make it 5-0.
Edmonton hosts the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday. Chicago continues its six-game road trip Friday night against the Calgary Flames before facing off against the Vancouver Canucks the following night.
