OnePlus has unveiled an intriguing new smartwatch with the debut of the Watch 2R model. As the "R" in the name suggests, this watch is a budget-friendly alternative to the Watch 2. OnePlus has taken a similar approach with its 12R smartphone, offering similar performance to the premium 12 model, but without some of the premium features. Despite this, the Chinese company has made some daring choices with its first "R" smartwatch. Priced competitively at Rs. 17,999, it shares the same hardware as the well-received OnePlus Watch 2, with impressive features. These features may make the affordable Watch 2R the more appealing choice for some users. One noticeable change with the Watch 2R, compared to the Watch 2, is its design. OnePlus has shifted from a modern to a vintage look with the Watch 2R. The new brushed aluminium design is engaging, lacking the confusion of its predecessor, which combined classic and modern influences in a way that felt out of place.
The Watch 2R, in comparison to the Watch 2, maintains a classic design with two buttons on the right side, resembling a typical chronograph watch. This gives it a balanced and consistent look, making it suitable for wearing on the left hand without looking odd. Similar to the Watch 2, the two buttons on the Watch 2R (home and multifunction) can be customized as desired. One noticeable difference between the two watches is that the Watch 2R uses aluminium for its case instead of stainless steel. As a result, the Watch 2R weighs only 59 grams with the straps, compared to the Watch 2's 80 grams. Individuals who prefer the weight and durability of stainless steel might opt for the Watch 2 instead. Additionally, the Watch 2R replaces the sapphire crystal glass (common in traditional watches) with Panda glass (common on smartphones), which is more vulnerable to scratches.

The link between the two buttons may be gone on the new model from OnePlus, but they've kept the two rounded buttons that are simple to press and recognize. The lugs have been beefed up, and the fresh straps, with a pleasant texture, fit seamlessly and look sharp, simplifying strap replacement. Unlike the Watch 2, where the straps embraced the lugs for a more contemporary yet perplexing look. The bands have silicon material and the buckle is stainless steel. OnePlus kept the magnetic charging aspect from the Watch 2 model. I like how the watch attaches to the charging dock magnetically. However, the exposed metal pins could cause skin issues. The Watch 2R has a good IP68 rating and can handle water pressure up to 5 ATM. What it lacks compared to the Watch 2 is the MIL-STD-810H certification for extreme weather conditions. With the same 1.43-inch AMOLED display as the Watch 2, OnePlus opted for a flat Panda display glass with numbers near the edge. These numbers don't add functionality but help slim down the bezel, making it look less bulky than the Watch 2. Although the bezel thickness matches the Watch 2, it is still thicker than the older Galaxy Watch 6.
The screen of the display on the OnePlus Watch 2R works great outdoors and shows text and icons clearly enough. The always-on display has been adjusted slightly brighter to make it easier to read information on the watch faces. To use the OnePlus Watch 2R, you will need to get the OHealth app from Oppo, which is only compatible with Android devices and can be found on the Google Play Store. The app has a user-friendly interface that is now compatible with foldable devices and neatly organizes all the necessary features for easy access. What sets this app apart from others at this price range is that the settings are easily accessible. Setting up the app is quick and simple if you already have an OnePlus/Oppo account. Your health data collected by the app can be synced with other services like Google Fit, Google Health Connect, and Strava, allowing you to switch to another smartwatch brand or ecosystem without losing your progress.
