Low-intensity bicycle bomb blast in Madurai

A bomb placed in a box connected to a timer and battery tied to a bicycle blasted near the Gupta Auditorium housing a Ram temple at Anna Nagar in Madurai in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Senior police officers, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, private detectives from the ‘Q’ branch, Finger Print Bureau experts and central intelligence personnel visited the blast site. The Anna Nagar police have registered a case under Section 5 of Explosive Substances Act 1908.

Sanjay Mathur, Inspector-General and Commissioner of Police (Madurai City) said the explosion as a minor blast and special teams had been formed to investigate.
"It is a sophisticated device. There was a timer and eight batteries connected to the explosive," police said.

The blast occurred within less than 24 hours of Sanjay Mathur taking charge as Madurai Police Commissioner.

The incident took place before the State level BJP conference which was re-scheduled to May 10 and 10. The meet will be attended by top most BJP leaders including L. K. Advani, Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and others.

Police sources said, the blast seemed to create a panic ahead of two day BJP State level conference. Top most leaders of BJP including L. K. Advani are going to attend. Chitirai festival and Lord Kallazhagar’s visit to Madurai can also be the reasons for the blast.  (msn)
