Indian writer-crusader Sushmita Banerjee aka Sayeda Kamala, the writer of the 1997 bestseller "Kabuliwalara Bangali Bou" (A Kabuliwala's Bengali Wife) was shot dead outside her home in Afghanistan by suspected militants on Wednesday. Her corpse was found lying near a religious school on Thursday morning.

The 49-year-old Kolkata-born Bengali writer, who was married to an Afghan businessman Janbaaz Khan, met a tragic end  as militants barged into her home in Paktika province, dragged her out of her home, tied up her hands and riddled her with bullets.

The writer who shot into fame with her controversial 2000 bestseller “Mullah Omar, Taliban O Ami” that was also made into a Bollywood film “Escape From Taliban” (2003) is believed to have been on the hitlist of the militant group.

While propelled the barbaric act is yet to be known, but press states that she irked the fundamentalist group with her ceaseless social work directed towards women's upliftment and healthcare.
