A Russian performance artist protesting against Russia's “police state” did something unthinkable to express his disapproval.

Pyotr Pavlensky nailed his scrotum to the ground outside Moscow's Red Square, as the country marked national police day. The police rushed to his aid, took him to the hospital and later into custody. He was later released by the court on charges of petty hooliganism.

A video released on the web shows the naked artist sitting on Russia's most famous square just outside the Kremlin on Sunday afternoon after nailing himself to the ground.

Pavlensky is known for performing his self-mutilating stunts. He pulled off yet another dare-devil life-risking stunt to warn that "we are on the threshold of becoming a police state."
