For all you Phoneixians who have been planning to buy a Bull Dog or a Persian kitten, the sale is off the cards for good!
The Phoenix City Council has prohibited the sale of dogs and cats from all large commercial breeders.
The ordinance, which came through on Wednesday, stops shops from selling dogs or cats unless they're rescues from a shelter or pound.
Violators of the law could face up to six months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Not just that, the pet stores will have to maintain records for up to a year showing the source of all dogs and cats bought and sold.
The news comes as a big win for the animal activists who reveal that pets from puppy and kitten mills are sheltered in crowded, unsanitary kennels and many don't have adequate access to veterinary care, food or water.
Opponents of the ordinance, however deem it an unfair, and say that the new law mot only portrays all pet stores in a negative light, but also limits the options for the buyers.
