Trump fires Sally Yates for defying him on travel ban

United States President Donald Trump on (Monday) 30th January fired the acting attorney general, a holdover from the Barack Obama’s administration, after her order not to defend his controversial Immigration ban to the Justice Department attorneys.

White House released a statement in which said “Sally Yates "weak on borders and very weak on illegal immigration" and also criticized Democrats for not yet confirming the appointment of attorney general-designate Jeff Sessions.

The statement also said “Sally Yates had betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the country.

“President Donald Trump relieved Ms Sally Yates from her duties”, it added.

White House further said “until Senator Jeff Sessions is finally confirmed by the Senate, where he is being wrongly held up by Democrat senators for strictly political reasons. Federal prosecutor Dana Boente will serve as acting attorney general.”

While Trump administration is facing multiple lawsuits and worldwide opprobrium over an order banning refugees from 7 Muslim countries, Yates had whipped the rug from under her boss in a defiant and damaging parting shot.

In a memo to the Department of Justice staff, Sally Yates, who a career government lawyer, who was promoted by then President Barack Obama, expressed her doubts about the legality and morality of Donald Trump’s decree, which started mass protest across the country.

She said that her responsibility was to ensure that the position of the Department of Justice was not only legally defensible, but was informed by their best view of what the law is.

She was not convinced with the defense of the executive order was consistent with these responsibilities nor she convinced that the executive order was lawful

She also said “For as long as she was the attorney general, the Department of Justice will not present arguments in defense of the executive order, until and unless she is convinced that it was appropriate to do so.”
