Shashi Tharoor once again slams UK for not teaching Colonial History in Schools
March 04, 2017 17:05
Former Diplomat and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor have always stood up for India in various debates and conferences.
Recently, Mr. Tharoor questioned in an interview, why even history students in the United Kingdom are not taught colonial history. He pointed out that young people in the UK have no idea about the atrocities the British committed during their occupation of India.
“If you don’t know where you come from, how will you appreciate where you are going?”
“Children doing a-levels in history don’t know a single line of colonial history,” Tharoor said.
Tharoor said that this is ‘historical amnesia’. This phenomenon seems to be a reason, why most of the people in the UK feel that they did a favor to India by colonizing.
He went on to say that how children, today in the UK have no idea about the atrocities their forefather committed and the fact British Empire fueled its Industrial revolution by plundering India.
Mr. Tharoor also clarified that the issue does not affect the bilateral relations the two nations have today.
He said that the history has to be taught to the young people, so that they appreciate where they are going in the future.
“If you don’t know where you come from, how will you appreciate where you are going?”
It is surprising that the United Kingdom does not teach its young students, colonial history. Maybe that is why, they still believe that colonizing India was a good thing.
This is not this first time Mr. Tharoor slammed the British Empire’s colonial rule in India and reduced it to one the poorest after 200 hundreds of plunder.
Mr. Tharoor once quoted “Sun doesn’t set on the British empire, because even God could not trust the British in the dark.”
