Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the capital of the United States to engage in discussions with President Donald Trump, who has recently taken office again and is known for his stringent positions on tariffs and immigration. During his two-day trip, PM Modi is also slated to meet with billionaire Elon Musk. This meeting marks the first direct interaction between Modi and Trump since the latter assumed the presidency for another term last month. PM Modi will be residing at the Blair House, the official guest house for visiting dignitaries located in the center of Washington, D.C. Upon his arrival, he was warmly greeted by members of the Indian-American community, who braved the cold and rain to show their support. They chanted phrases like "Bharat Mata ki Jai,""Vande Mataram," and "Modi Modi" while waving both Indian and American flags.

A significant focus of PM Modi's visit is anticipated to revolve around addressing potential trade penalties from the U.S. against India, aiming to prevent high tariffs and broaden trade relations. His trip occurs just after President Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports globally, a decision likely to affect Indian companies. The agenda may also cover discussions on investment, energy, defense, technology, and immigration policies. Additionally, it is expected that the leaders will address the evolving scenario in the Indo-Pacific region, the situation in Ukraine, and developments in the Middle East.

Despite the cold weather, the Indian diaspora in Washington DC has welcomed me with a very special welcome. My gratitude to them. pic.twitter.com/H1LXWafTC2
PM Modi is the fourth international leader to be welcomed by Trump in the weeks following his inauguration, coming after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and King Abdullah II of Jordan. He has already met with Tulsi Gabbard, the U.S. Director of National Intelligence, to discuss various aspects of the partnership between India and the U.S. On Thursday, Modi plans to meet Elon Musk at the White House and is also expected to connect with other prominent business figures. This marks PM Modi's tenth visit to the United States in his role as prime minister and his fourth engagement with Trump in the presidential capacity. In 2024, Biden hosted him for a ceremonial state visit. Modi's first visit to the U.S. as prime minister occurred in 2014 during Barack Obama's presidency.
