Ranveer Singh Ram Leela - Goliyon Ki Raasleela Movie Review and Rating

What happens when a master storyteller like Sanjay Leela Bhansali takes on a William Shakespeare classic like “Romeo and Juliet”? Why, a masterpiece film like “Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela of course (Never mind the long title)! Agreed, Bhansali's GKRRL isn't novel in thought, but the ingenious director tweaks his script with 440 watts of passion and intensity and a befitting Indian set-up that makes this film one of the best celluloid adaptations of the “guns and roses” tragedy ever. GKRRL is indeed Bhansali's opulent epic best so far.

Story

The film orbs round its two central characters — Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone) and two warring clans — Rajadis and Sanadas. Despite the numerous tragedies and bloodied past of the two trigger-loving Gujarati clans, Leela and Ram fall hopelessly in love. When the truth comes to light, bullets fly, blood flows and the 'bahus' fall victims to the hostility.

Amidst the bloodbath, Ram and Leela stroke, caress, kiss and cuddle unabashedly, rising the heat with every passing frame they share. Bhansali uses his lead pair's real and reel chemistry to infuse sexual tension and compel you to take part in their love-hate relationship. In general, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most commercial work so far with ample doses of raunch and ras (juice). But the big question is, can Ram and Leela unite amidst this enmity and slaughter?

Analysis :

For a filmmaker like Bhansali, taking up a cliched plot as Romeo-Juliet and redefining the epic love saga with an innovative twirl is indeed laudworthy. The way he infuses unconventionality into every sequence, vividness in ever frame, aggressiveness into his characters and passion and sensuality in his leads is truly mind-boggling. And then there is Bhansali's trademark lavish sets and extravagant dance sequences that delights.

A stickler for perfection, Bhansali never for once strays away from the main plot — a story of two warring families. While Sanjay may be accused of a slightly indulgent script running two-hours-and-thirty-five-minutes, it's nevertheless a treat for the eyes.

The musical score of the movie is outstanding. After eons, the audience had a chance to treat their ears to mesmeric music. Thanks to Monty Sharma for the impeccable background score too.

The action, production design, DoP — everything is top notch.

Who would have ever thought that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone would sizzle up the screen in such a way. The real-life couple make the perfect reel Romeo-Juliet. Ranveer plays the robust Ram with aplomb, often trotting around in a well-chiseled body and often breaking into killer dance moves. His transformation from a charming bloke to a dare-me-not lover is mind-blowing.

2013 is Deepika's year, for sure. She pulls off another ace this time as the impish Leela, who willingly loses her heart to her enemy and stays true to her love even when circumstances change.

Kudos to the supporting cast of the film for adding depth and more colors into the script. Supriya Pathak, in her menacing act as Sanada community's Godmother, Dhankore, is outstanding. Homi Wadia, Gulshan Daviah, Richa Chadda, Abhimanyu Singh, Sharad Kelkar, Barkha Bist and Raza Murad are first-rate in their respective acts. And lastly, not to forget the firework item track by Priyanka Chopra. She truly makes for an eye candy in the song.

Final Word:
If you ain't convinced by the review so far, here are a multiple reasons why you should not miss this movie for anything: the electrifying chemistry between Ranveer and Deepika, the beautiful drama , the mesmerizing musical score, the action-packed narrative and of course, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's execution of the script. This is Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most accomplished work to date, a work of outstanding artistry. A must-watch for anyone who digs for a true cinematic experience!
