Alia Bhatt Highway Movie Review and Rating
It's not everyday that a Bollywood filmmaker, who has previously dished out a mixed bag of crowdpleasers like Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal and Rockstar, braves a road less traveled, deviating from the diktats of commercial filmmaking, and doles out a cinematic journey that is starkly different to his previous films, in both concept and form. Yes, Imtiaz Ali trumps his critics with his latest venture 'Highway'. Garnished with lovely writing, beautiful landscape and two stellar leads, Ali's emotionally-charged 'Highway' is honest filmmaking at its best.

Story
Highway is a character-driven film in which Bhatt plays Veera Tripathi, daughter of an obscenely wealthy Delhi tycoon, who is abducted by a gang of goons led by Mahabir (Randeep Hooda), just days ahead of her weddding. As they travel across six states , Veera succumbs to Stockholm Syndrome and falls for her captor.
Analysis :
One thing that will catch your attention is how quiet the film is. Besides AR Rahman's compositions, the film lacks little to no background music. Even the most dramatic scenes are enacted against pin drop silence. For a commercially movie, 'Highway' is besotted with a wad of unconventional stuff.
The commercial elements are palpable only in the second half, but they don’t intrude into the story. Veera undergoes an inner transformation as she travels with Mahabir across deserts and mountains. Two lonely people discover each other and life amid Mr Rahman’s soothing background.
Performance :
After watching Alia's debut film, few expected her to ditch her diva avatar. In Highway, she not only dumps her glam facade, but also shocks you with both her range and dedication. She is perfect casting and it's difficult to think of another actress in the role. The resonances between Veera and Bhatt is palpable. And then, there is the honesty that helps Alia portray Veera’s internal journey as her own with utmost conviction.
Accolades to Hooda too for putting up such a brilliant, balanced performance His is one of those roles in which the character graph is a languid incline and there is little opportunity to truly cut loose. Hooda eschews all temptations to chew scenery and paces himself brilliantly.
Final Word:
Highway expresses Ali's lobe for storytelling and disdain for all kinds of artifice. Highway is Ali's most accomplished film so far. A must watch!
