Story
The story of Bhoothnath Returns begins where it ended in 'Bhoothnath'. Kailash Nath (Amitabh Bachchan) returns to Bhoot world only to find that he has become the butt of jokes for his failure to scare even a child. So he goes back to earth with a mission to get back his reputation. However, he meets another child named Akhrot (Parth) and the two become friends. Akhrot is a slum dweller and here Bhoothnath encounters the hard realities of life due to a corrupt politician of the region. On Akhrot's insistence Bhoothnath decides to contest election. Herein begins Bhoothnath’s election journey which is the crux of the film.
Analysis :
Bhoothnath Returns is an impressive film that wittily takes up a social issue like corruption in the country. Who could have thought that a simple ghost story would transform into a political satire. The film is full of hilarious punch lines and witty one liners. The second half drags but still keeps you engaged. Only when melodrama sets in and converts into an infomercial on voting that you are left somber. The film could have been a smash hit if the climax was not overdramatic.
Performance :
Amitabh Bachchan is brilliant and handles the toughest of scenes effortlessly. He is everybit the superstar we know. The seasoned actor in him brings balance to the movie in scenes which tend to fall flat. His brilliant screen presence sails the film through.
Parth Bhalerao as 'Akhrot' is the perfect casting for the film. At times he almost steals the show from Amitabh Bachchan. As the character Akhrot, he ‘overacts’ but it works well for the film.
Boman Irani as the corrupt politician is winsome. He adds more shades to his role that makes it fascinating. Giving him more screen space in the movie could have helped the drama.
Final Word:
Go for this movie for the humour it dishesh out and for superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
