Akshay Kumar Holiday Movie Review and Rating

Think there are only two ways to do an army film — one, about war, tragedy and human loss, and secondly, about spy agent/spy thriller. If so, then A R Murugadoss' Bollywood spin of his Tamil blockbuster “Thuppakki” - “Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty” is a funny respite from all the army flicks you have seen so far. And you can't blame him. It's after all an Akshay Kumar movie. And when it's Akki at the helm of things, you can't expect anything more but entertainment, entertainment and more entertainment. Let's find out how good is Akshay Kumar's comedy-action-thriller really is?

Story

Captain Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar), a soldier with the Indian army, returns home to Mumbai for holidays. His family finds a match for him, Sahiba [Sonakshi Sinha], but he rejects her. Later, he finds out that she is a boxer and is taken aback by her personality.

The story takes a twist when an anti-social activity in Mumbai city involves him into something huge.

A patriot in the heart and a special agent with the Indian Army, Virat is pulled into a huge network of terrorism. The rest of the film is about his fight against the terrorist network and the eradication of the sleeper cells from the city.

Generally, in entertainers, its the star power that precedes over the screenplay. This movie, however, comes off as an exception as it never loses focus from its core issue, which is the fight between an army man and terrorists. What more, post-interval, the movie diversifies into race-against-time thriller, lending it an extra edge.

Also, Murugadoss keeps the entertainment-seeking spectator at the edge of their seats with abundant twists and turns in the screenplay before leading it to a nail-biting finale. But the message that the film communicates is loud and clear.

Deftly filmed and edited by Amitabh Shukla, the only gripe here us that the romantic portions could have been shorter and snappier.

Although the makers had roped in Pritam to belt out chart-busting numbers, the soundtrack is pretty ordinary. Not to forget Greg Powell and Anl Arasu's e raw, gritty and appealing fight sequences that are a sure treat for the action lovers.

Performance :

Govinda is restrained in a cameo. Sonakshi Sinha adds life to the script. Sumeet Raghavan is impressive and totally in sync with his character.

Debutant Farhad [aka Freddy Daruwala] is good as the antagonist. He has impressive screen presence and plays his role with conviction.

The scene-stealer, however, is Akshay Kumar, who surely reinvents himself with this one. He puts a power-packed portrayal without going overboard. A treat for the movie lovers.

Final Word:
All in all, HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY is a slick action-thriller that engrosses, enthralls and captivates. A one-time watch!
