Story
The film is based on the tru life story of Olympic Champion Mary Kom, which traces her success. Mary is the daughter of a small villager, in Manipur. Boxer Mary Kom (Priyanka Chopra) dared to dream beyond what seemed to be possible for her. Despite being a woman, Mary chooses boxing against her father's wish and at a time when sports means cricket to the vast majority of Indians. Mary gets married to Ondler (Darshan Kumaar) at the peak of her career and soon she begets twins. After marriage and two babies, Mary returns to boxing as she is unable to get a decent job for herself. But she doesn't have the stamina and youth by her side. The bureaucrats is against her. The biopic is a story of how she re-emerges from a life of self-imposed oblivion and claim back success.
Analysis :
The heart-wrenching story of Mary Kom's struggles is indeed touching. The movie could have been told in a better way. The first-half focuses too much on the father-daughter relationship. The film could not truly portray the life of India's most hardworking sport's star. It seemed to be a half-hearted attempt, making it a blend of Chak De! and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
The major problem with the film is Mary’s lack of chemistry with Ondler. This particular element is critical as her husband had been her primary support system. Priyanka was brilliant and tried her best to upholds the undying spirit of Mary Kom when everything else failed.
Performance :
Priyanka Chopra delivers a power packed performance and proves once again to be a talented actress. The 'Gunday' actress gets every expression right, her every emotion was perfect. Getting herself the physical details of the role also helped her to infuse authenticity in her character. Her performance was brilliant and engrossing. Its sad that the others failed to deliver.
Rest of the cast were average. Darshan Kumar fumbles in his role and Thapa grumbles a little too much. And others didn't have much to do.
Final Word:
Watch it for Priyanka Chopra and Mary Kom.
