From Saturday night and all through Sunday, more rain sinks Chennai. The precipitation recorded by the Met office is of 15cm between 8.30am on Saturday and 10pm on Sunday. Heavy rains also drained all coastal districts due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal. On Sunday, the death toll related to rain climbed to 59. Rains poured in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

Rains expose illegalities by officials and builders

Nearly 500 of Chennai localities are flooded. Illegalities by officials and builders have clearly been exposed by the rain. Especially, to those who have developed townships across lake beds. On the top of it, the rains showed the wastage of hundreds of crores of rupees by the corporation on clogged and inadequate storm water drains, which have made Chennai a disaster zone.

The city’s misery was lightened a bit as the temperatures were brought down by rains. According to the recording from the Met office, the maximum temperature on Sunday was 25.3°C, while the minimum was 24°C.

Most severely hit localities due to rains include Choolai, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Purusawalkkam, Kolathur and Velachery.

More rain predictions

The Met office is expecting more rain till Monday 8.30am. Schools and colleges would be kept closed on Monday by the authorities in eleven districts, such as Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Trichy and Perambalur.
