Domestic Violence: It Can Stop

To mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Arizona Governor Doug Ducey is all set to light the state capitol building's dome purple once again under the “Lighting Arizona Purple” campaign.

The governor has proclaimed “Domestic Violence: It Can Stop,” for this year’s domestic-violence awareness month.

The “Lighting Arizona Purple” campaign was developed by the Governor’s Commission in partnership with Arizona Public Service, Tucson Electric Power, Salt River Project,  the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Arizona Cardinals. The campaign is a symbol of Arizona’s dedication to reduce the number of people suffering domestic abuse.

The University of Phoenix Stadium, the Arizona Lottery Building and Maricopa County will also be lighting purple.
Ducey said in a release that, “If there is one thing we need to correct with regard to how some people view verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, it’s this: Domestic violence should never be seen as something that only happens to ‘someone else."

“In 2015, we suffered 107 known deaths related to domestic violence, and children witnessed domestic violence every 44 minutes. That’s not ‘someone else.’ That is all of us.”

The lighting ceremony will take place at the Arizona state Capitol house lawn, 1700 W. Washington Street from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The event is free to all, but the registration is required.

The release said that, Ducey sent a letter to all 92 Arizona mayors urging them to participate in domestic violence awareness activities. Avondale, Goodyear, Flagstaff, Glendale, Peoria and Yuma are among some of the other cities expected to be lighting municipal buildings purple.

The governor's office is also encouraging Arizonans to light their homes purple for October and post pictures to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #LightingAZPurple.
