When we proudly boast that we are in IT age, it is really an insult to record incidents of offences against women and female infanticides. While the government passed orders not to scan and reveal the sex of fetus—in order to avoid abortions—this seems to have not put a check to those who want to eradicate baby girls. A recent incident of a father slamming his three-month-old daughter against the wall has sent shock waves among people in Bengaluru. If we look into details, a baby girl was born to Reshma Bhanu-Umar Farooq, residents of KG Halli of Bangalore, three months ago. The innocent baby was christened Neha Afreen.
Umar Farooq wanted a baby boy and was upset that his wife gave birth to a girl. He not only showed reluctance to see the innocent face of the baby, but pressed his wife Reshma Bhanu to leave behind the infant at the hospital and come back to home. Mother’s love didn’t let Reshma abandon her kid and she forcefully took the baby along with her. Three months passed and little girl’s sweet cries and cute smiles didn’t change the mind of cruel father. When Reshma was busy in kitchen, Umar Farooq took his daughter in hands and slammed her against the wall. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was kept in ICU. After battling with life for four days, the baby lost her life.
How long such incidents should take place? Why is it that women are still unwanted by many wicked people in the society? When such barbarous incidents come to end? Well, these questions remain rhetorical. As rightly said by a famous activist, Kandukuri Veeresalingam: “The denigration of women has ruined our society.” (Phani)
