Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in various bodily processes, including the production of red blood cells, DNA synthesis, energy maintenance, and the development of the nervous system. A deficiency could occur if the body fails to obtain the required daily amount of this vitamin through diet. In such cases, a physician might recommend vitamin B12 supplements, available in the form of tablets or strips, to enhance overall health. However, it raises the question of whether one form is superior to the other. Dr. Manjusha Agarwal, a senior consultant in internal medicine at Gleneagles Hospital Parel in Mumbai, explained that strips allow for direct absorption of vitamin B12 into the bloodstream, leading to more effective results. “The general belief is that dissolvable strips are absorbed quicker than tablets, resulting in better efficacy,” Dr. Agarwal stated.

This sublingual method avoids the gastrointestinal tract, which could be beneficial for those who struggle with absorption, such as individuals with gastrointestinal issues, elderly patients, or those on treatments that might inhibit B12 absorption, according to Dr. Maneendra, a consultant and head of the critical care department at Gleneagles Hospitals in Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad. “In comparison to tablets, B12 strips tend to act more quickly because of their direct absorption and offer the convenience of being taken without water, making them particularly useful for anyone who has trouble swallowing pills,” Dr. Maneendra added.

Nonetheless, both forms are generally effective for the majority of people when taken according to medical advice, as noted by Dr. Maneendra. “Tablets can be more economical and are available in various dosages, while strips are usually more expensive due to their sophisticated delivery method,” he explained. Dr. Maneendra recommended B12 strips for patients with significant deficiencies or absorption problems, while advising tablets for regular supplementation. “Ultimately, the decision should be based on individual preferences, medical history, and guidance from a healthcare professional. To achieve lasting results, it is important to maintain a balanced diet containing B12-rich foods like dairy products, eggs, meat, and fortified items in addition to supplementation,” he suggested.

Dr. Agarwal highlighted the importance of recognizing that not everyone requires B12 supplementation. “Be cautious of taking any supplements that catch your eye online or through social media. Supplements should only be consumed following a doctor's recommendation. If you are uncertain about the suitability of vitamin B12 supplement strips for your needs, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. Your doctor can assess your health for further investigation,” stated Dr. Agarwal.
