An astronomical body on Thursday announced that the crescent moon for the Islamic New Year, Hijri, is likely to be seen on August 31 (Saturday) in most countries in the Middles East, including the United Arab Emirates and Africa.
However, the official announcement regarding the same will be made tomorrow when the moon sighting committee will meet.
According to astronomers, the crescent moon can be seen with an optical aid on August 30 in selected countries in North and South America and it will be visible to naked eyes around the world on August 31.
In Islam, the month starts with the sighting of a new moon. The beginning of every month is marked by the observance of a new moon.
According to astrologers, the moon is 28 days old on Thursday, meaning that it is 28th of Dhu al Hijjah - the last month of Islamic (Hijri) Calendar.
