Indian Tennis is once again in the running for significant achievements on the world stage. Until recently, it was only the doubles players getting all the accolades. Now, Somdev Devvarman, a singles player has re-entered the world's top 100 tennis players list, making a comeback at 98th position.
According to fresh ATP rankings released this week, Somdev jumped three spots to take rank number 98. He had achieved his career's best ranking of 62 in 2011, before a shoulder injury caused him much trouble with matches as well as ranking. Since then, he stayed just shy of 100.
With the newly released rankings, Somdev has great motivation. Another India who made significant progress is Yuki Bhambri, who jumped 190 places to take 287 rank owing to his performance that made him the runner up at the Taiwan Challenger.
Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, the winning doubles team, took 5th position, while Mahesh Bhupathi and partner took 10th rank. Rohan Bopanna and his partner stood at 7th position on the ATP doubles rankings. Novak Djokovic maintained his close competition with US Open champion Rafael Nadal, staying ahead by a slim difference on the ATP rankings list.
