Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, during a highly confidential pre-dawn operation, was shifted to Pune's Yerwada jail today from Mumbai's Arthur Road jail to undergo 42 months remaining sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. A jail official furthered that the 53-year-old Dutt was taken from Arthur Road jail after midnight in a well-guarded operation by authorities who wanted to avoid the media hype and glare during the three-hour travel between Mumbai and Pune.
High Security Yerwada Jail in Pune
Sanjay Dutt was known to have been escorted to Pune jail at about 4 a.m. from Mumbai while there were three police vans that took him to the Pune jail and the security reasons were also mentioned in support for the secret operation. As revealed by the sources, Dutt would be kept in a high security cell in Yerwada jail.
Another prominent factor remain that Dutt had been lodged at the 'Anda Cell' (Egg-shaped) in the high security block in the Arthur Road jail since 16 May subsequent to his surrender before the TADA court in Mumbai. Even though, Meeran Borwankar who is an additional director general (Prisons), Maharashtra, when contacted did not give any details about the arrangements being made, if any, inside the Yerwada jail.
Matter which are already known that the Supreme Court in its 21 March verdict reduced Dutt's jail term from six years to five years for illegal possession of arms and also that the actor had already served 18 months behind bars.
Finally, Dutt surrendered before a designated Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court as the apex court on 14 May refused to grant him more time to give himself up for undergoing the remainder of his five-year jail term., while on 10 May, the Supreme Court was known to have rejected Dutt's plea seeking review of its judgement on his conviction at the same time the five-year imprisonment.
