A deadly blaze at a Peoria home nearly killed two people  after the house inexplicably exploded into flames on Wednesday night. The explosion took place at about 9.43 p.m. in the evening at a home near 79th Avenue and Cholla Street.

The firefighter successfully "airlifted" the two injured - a 21-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man - to the Maricopa County Burns Center where they were declared “critical” by the doctors. The duo had suffered 30-40 percent burns.

Fortunately, when the explosion occurred, a Peoria police officer was in the neighborhood attending to some business when he heard the big boom and at once rushed to the scene of accident. He spotted two people inside and made arrangements for their rescue, even before the fire crews and paramedics arrived.

The fire was quickly contained by the fire crews. There was no other major damage to any life and property in the neighborhood. The officials are now investigating the cause of the fire.

Shedding light on the possible cause of the fire, Peoria Fire captain Rob Brewster said, “We did determine there was natural gas that did run to the residence,” he explained. "Our HAZMAT crew was on the scene. They did some metering, but we’re not able to determine if that was the cause of the explosion.”

Peoria Fire Department Chief Bobby Ruiz said that “there were live electrical wires over the house, but it was unknown whether they had any role in the explosion is not known.”
