In a bid to reinstate the ecosystem in the iconic gorge, the feds have decided to swamp the Grand Canyon as a part of an ongoing experiment to rebuild beaches and restore fish habitat.
The feds plan to pump in 37,200 cubic water feet per second over the course of five days to inundate an Olympic-sized swimming pool into the Colorado River.
The purpose of deluging the gorge is to create pre-dam conditions, to scatter the tons of sediment throughout the canyon, creating sandbars and beaches for campers as well as offering protection for archaeological sites as well as wildlife.
The flood operation is scheduled to last for five days.
