TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has proposed a common number for all emergency call.
As per the proposal’112’ will be used to connect the police, fire and ambulance.
The initiative is similar to that of US service where ‘911’ is used in case of emergency.
Authority recommends that the number 112 be adopted as the single emergency number for India. This new number may be popularised extensively through a public awareness campaign by the Government," TRAI said.
The facility can be availed either on mobile or landline phones. TRAI has announced anyone can make the call irrespective of blocked call conditions.
TRAI has also suggested on setting up of Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) to handle distress calls.
The PSAP includes facility like direct incoming calls to a distressed person and tracking his exact location.
With the help of this system police can be alerted and can be dispatched in emergency case.
Responding resources like PCR vans, fire vehicles and ambulance will be fitted with GPS (Global Positioning System) to transmit location to PSAP.
