Apple is preparing to showcase iOS 19, the upcoming version of its iPhone operating system, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025 scheduled for June. Before this eagerly awaited announcement, a recent report has emerged revealing the devices that will support this update. It appears that the tech company based in Cupertino may discontinue support for the iPhone XR and several other models, indicating that these devices might not receive the latest OS version from Apple. According to an insider account shared on X (formerly known as Twitter)—which has previously provided accurate information regarding iOS compatibility—9to5Mac has reported that the upcoming update will exclude the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max from its compatibility list. All these models were introduced by Apple during its September 2018 event and rely on the A12 Bionic chipset, suggesting that support for this chipset may be phased out.
If this speculation is validated, it suggests that iPhone models starting from the iPhone 11 and onwards, including the iPhone SE (2020) and subsequent versions, will be eligible for the iOS 19 update. However, it is essential to note that not all devices may have access to the same features. For instance, Apple's artificial intelligence suite, known as Apple Intelligence, launched last year, remains exclusive to the iPhone 16 series and the iPhone 15 Pro, which are powered by the A17 Pro SoC or higher. Additionally, the report points to Apple likely dropping support for one of its iPad models as well. The seventh generation iPad from 2019, which contains the A10 Fusion SoC, is expected to miss the upcoming iPadOS 19 update.
This new information contradicts a prior report that indicated all iPhone models currently operating on iOS 18 would be able to upgrade to iOS 19. It is also important to consider that there is a significant amount of time before the update is officially rolled out, which means that Apple could potentially alter its plans. Therefore, it is wise to view this information with a degree of skepticism.
