Nestle Waters is planning to open a bottling plant in Phoenix. The world's largest water bottler is expected to spend $35 million on the project.
The 394,755-square-foot plant will be launched at 43rd Avenue and Buckeye Road. The plant is aimed to fill 264 million half-liter bottles or almost 35 million gallons in its first year. It may also create 40-50 jobs.
Stephanie Bracken from the water department said that, "Phoenix’s water supply is sound and sustainable as a result of multiple water sources and a logical, methodical approach to supply planning, infrastructure management, conservation, and drought preparation."
According to the Phoenix officials, the city tap-water supply is secure for decade despite regional drought. Sierra Club Arizona director Sandy Bahr said that, "It's certainly ironic to some degree to have a water-bottling plant in one of the driest cities in the country." "It's not a good direction for Phoenix."
Christine Mackie, the director of Community and Economic Development, said that, "As a country we have really gotten away from manufacturing, and what you'll see over the next decade is Phoenix really taking a stance on manufacturing and bringing manufacturing back."
"We have a great buffer for drought and shortage," Water Services Director Kathryn Sorensen said.
