Vishu is the Hindu new year festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala and nearby, Tulunadu region of Karnataka.
The festival falls on the month of Medam in the Malayalam calendar, usually in the second week of April
Vishu literally means equal, and in the festival context, it connotes the completion of spring equinox.
Vishu is notable for its solemnity and the general lack of pomp show that characterize other Hindu festivals of Kerala such as Onam.
Kerala Hindus of Arizona is organizing celebrations of Vishu on April 9th at Indo-American Cultural & Religious Center 2804 W Maryland Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85017. From 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The festival is being organized to bring the real feel of traditional Vishu with an assortment of cultural programs including Vishu Kani, Prayer, Vishu Kaineetam, dance and song performances by professional artists.
There will also be a delicious feast called "Vishu Sadya" with more than 20 traditional items served on a banana leaf.
