Officers have confirmed for a shooting in downtown Phoenix which led to the death of a man. The shooting occurred on Friday afternoon in a northern alley by 3rd venue and Culver St. The site of shooting was just at the heart of downtown Phoenix near Margaret T. Hance Park.
A resident called 911 stating a man and woman were fighting near her residence, to which the Phoenix Sgt. Alan Pfhol reverted and reached along with another Officer around 1:15 pm.
Sgt. Pfhol wrote an email stating, “an adult male sitting with his back against a garage and he had his arms wrapped around an adult female with a knife to her neck”
Despite all efforts to negotiate with the man to let go the 57 year old woman, the man did not approve. He even claimed to have a bomb under him which triggered the negotiation process.
Sgt. Also emailed, "The suspect charged at one of the officers with the knife, one officer fired his weapon and ended the threat" This suspicious man was yelling around the alley.
Pfhol said a second officer, “a 37-year-old eight-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department, fired one shot from his rifle”. The suspect, was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The 2nd officer who shot the suspect will be now on paid administrative leave, though its a standard procedure for when an Officer fires his or her service weapon.
The woman had a chain around her waist thus making it impossible for her to move. All the efforts of releasing her went in vain until the man was shot dead. Westbound I-10 was closed post Officer involved shooting.
The identity of man and woman are still not disclosed but a brief detail stating the two knew each other was released by the Police. Though their relationship and names still not disclosed.
The woman and the two Police officers were unharmed and the bystanders reported the firing thinking it as a backfire of a car. The investigation is still underway and more details expected to come in.
