iOS 18.3.1 started being distributed to users on Monday, marking the arrival of a significant update for compatible iPhone devices that addresses a critical security vulnerability. This flaw had the potential for some attackers to access a locked iPhone. Apple has acknowledged that this security issue might have been utilized to target certain individuals. Users who possess eligible iPhone models are encouraged to upgrade to the newest iOS version, which provides a resolution for the identified vulnerability. In the release notes pertaining to the iOS 18.3.1 and iPadOS 18.3.1 updates, Apple disclosed that it has remedied a weakness in the Accessibility service across its mobile and tablet operating systems. According to Apple, this security problem could facilitate a physical attack on a secured device, potentially enabling the deactivation of USB Restricted Mode.

USB Restricted Mode was introduced by the iPhone manufacturer with iOS 11.4.1 back in 2018, aiming to prevent any communication with an attached USB accessory. To link their devices with accessories, users must unlock their iPhones, which will not function if the device hasn’t been unlocked for over an hour. The most recent release notes indicate that Apple recognizes the possibility that this security issue may have been exploited in an “incredibly sophisticated attack against specific targets.” It is essential to highlight that an attacker would require physical access to the device to compromise it. Apple has given credit to Bill Marczak, a researcher at The Citizen Lab affiliated with the University of Toronto’s Munk School, for discovering this security vulnerability. Marczak has also advised users with applicable iPhone and iPad models to upgrade to the iOS 18.3.1 update, which should rectify the vulnerability.
The iOS 18.3.1 update is accessible for the iPhone 16 series, along with older models dating back to the iPhone XS. Users of iPhones and iPads can access the Settings app, navigate to General, and then select Software Update before choosing Install Now to proceed with the update.
