BS Yeddyurappa has resigned on Saturday as Karnataka chief minister before facing a crucial trust vote in the assembly.

The three-day old government of Yeddyurappa in state of Karnataka collapsed on May 19, with the Chief Minister announcing his decision to resign without facing a trust vote.

On Friday May 18, The three bench judge of Supreme Court has  ordered for a floor test in the legislation of Karnataka at 4 p.m. on Saturday May 19, forceful slashing of the 15-day window given by state Governor Vajubhai Vala to Mr. Yeddyurappa to prove his numbers in majority.

Yeddyurappa made an emotional speech on the floor of the House before announcing his decision to step down as numbers were stacked against the BJP in the newly elected House.

“I will not face confidence vote... I am going to resign,” he told the Assembly after a brief emotional speech.

His resignation would pave the way for formation of a government led by JD(S) State chief H.D. Kumaraswamy, who has the backing of the Congress. The newly formed alliance has claimed support of 117 MLAs in the 224-member House with an effective strength of 221.

Polling for two seats was not held due to various reasons, while Mr. Kumaraswamy won from two places.
