The investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office at a Fountain Hills home is connected to a killing spree in which a man identified as Dwight Jones murdered four people, Scottsdale police said.
Investigators scoured a home in the area of Kit Fox Place in Fountain Hills, where sources say the bodies of a husband and wife were found. They were later identified as 70-year-old Mary Simmons and 72-year-old Bryon Thomas.
The recent reports brings the total number of victims to six.
"They came here about 20 minutes to 12, I was ready to retire for sleep and my wife said, 'Something's happening,'" said neighbor Thomas Kositis, who said deputies then knocked on their door.
"They asked for the phone number of our neighbor next door, which she gave them, and then, of course, I was up, and she was upset and couldn’t sleep," Kositis said.
Deputies said they weren't getting an answer at the home of the husband and wife just before 12:30 a.m. on Monday so they used a ladder to look into a window. That's when they discovered the couple shot to death.
Police said they were conducting surveillance on Jones and he was seen driving in the area, and later seen dumping a .22-caliber gun stolen from the Fountain Hills home of Simmons and Thomas.
Officers haven't said what the connection is between Jones and the couple in the Fountain Hills home.
Kositis, who said he has known the couple who lives in the home for 15 years, was very emotional.
"They were good people," he said.
Police said Jones shot and killed himself inside his room at an Extended Stay America in Scottsdale as officers closed in on him early Monday morning.
