A 30-year-old woman from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh was arrested on Wednesday for cheating techies living in the United States under the pretext of marriage.

According to police, Koram Archana used pictures of other women on matrimonial sites in order to trap grooms. She had been earlier too arrested thrice for similar offenses.

The accused, a native of Nellore and resident of Begumpet in Hyderabad was arrested previously by Hyderabad, Rachakonda and Cyberabadpolice in connection with similar cases of fraud, police said.

In May this year, Archana contacted a family who was looking for a bride for their techie son resident in the United States claiming to be Pushtayi, a resident of Chennai. She used the images of another woman on her matrimonial profile and expressed her interest in marrying the techie.

Archana started having a talk with the techie online, where she one of these days sent him several images of the unidentified woman whose picture she had used in her profile on the matrimony website. In a short time, the women asked the techie to send him money to buy gold and platinum ornaments. However, after receiving the money,she stopped responding to his calls. Upon realizing that the woman cheated their son, the groom’s father filed a complaint against “Pushtayi”.

The police said that Archana was an MBA graduate from SV University and married to a lecturer who is working in Nellore. In order to make easy money, she resorted to cheating grooms who are living abroad and in search of Telugu brides.

“Whenever parents of a groom expressed their interest in meeting her in person, Archana would put forth her demands, collect the money, and subsequently, abscond. She has cheated several NRI grooms by simply using pictures of other women on her profile,” police said on Wednesday.

Following Archana’s arrest, the police seized 16 checkbooks, 10 bank passbooks, 34 ATM cards, 7 mobile phones, 2 PAN cards, and produced her before a court for judicial remand.
