The constant wrath of inhumanity presents yet another example in sight. Two men have been charged with federal human smuggling accusations following discovery of around 32 illegal immigrants inside a refrigerated semitruck on October 21st, 2019. The same was found at an immigration checkpoint in southern Arizona.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in an issued statement, said that the appointed agents at the time of the discovery inspected the trailer when a trained dog alerted them about the situation. Upon opening the trailer, the agents found 32 Mexican and Ecuadorian national, all being moved into the country illegally.
Border Patrol agent Joe Curran said in an issued statement to FOX10, “People aren't cargo, they're not meant to be in the back of tractor-trailers and they're not meant to be transported in this fashion.”
All the immigrants that were found in the truck were in the age group of 16-53 years old. All of them had long pants and short sleeved shirts worn while being transported into the country.
In a report, it said that the internal temperature of the trailer was 47 degrees which could have posed as a threat to the lives of these people who were being transported around.
Curran further clarified saying that the truck travelled across the Interstate 19 and then finally ended up reaching the checkpoint when they suspicious activity was suspected by K-9.
Curran exclaimed saying, “We refer vehicles to secondary where we get a better look and understanding of what is going on where we utilize this X-ray technology, which is a huge benefit.”
The two men accused, which included the 31 year old driver along with the 30 year old man in the passenger seat are US citizens. They have been charged with felony human smuggling violations. As for the 32 immigrants, they were being processed around in the Nogales port of the immigrant entry violations.
The White House also commented on the event tweeting, “Smuggling humans in commercial vehicles is not only unlawful: It places the passengers in extreme danger.”
Curran seemed to showcase the same concern on the situation and said in a statement with FOX10, “If there is an accident, these people are going to be violently thrown in the back of this trailer because there are no restraints or consideration for the people being smuggled.”
