Arizona’s most populous county has joined a growing national movement on Wednesday in which the areas have declared themselves as Second Amendment Sanctuaries and has also proclaimed the support for gun ownership rights.

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in Arizona has voted for declaring one of the nation’s fastest growing counties a “Second Amendment Preservation County,” following the La Paz, Yavapai and Mohave counties who have already declared themselves as “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.”

However, the Maricopa County has chose not to use the term “Sanctuary County” as the Chairman Clint Hickman had told the Arizona Republic that the term “Preservation County” would suit even better than being termed as “Sanctuary County.”

It is said that these resolutions typically include two provisions where in one which would be promising to uphold the Second Amendment and the other is that which pledges not to make use of the government funding for the future gun- control laws.

The resolution that has been passed in Maricopa County was passed with just one provision for protecting the Second Amendment, while it chose to drop the stipulation that in order to infringe on the gun rights the funds from the government would not be used.

Steve Gallardo who is the supervisor and a Democrat and who is the sole dissenting vote has argued that the resolution was “divisive” and “partisan.”

The activists of the gun- control have been critical of the board for not allowing a public discussion prior to the passing of the resolution.

The owners of the gun in Arizona are already free to carry a concealed firearm with no permit. It is also said that the background checks can also be by passed if their guns are brought at a gun show. However, regarding the other purchases a federal background check as required.
