In response to the increasing number of COVID-19 infections, the Singapore Health Ministry has released new guidelines for both citizens and travelers. The ministry reported a significant rise in cases, with approximately 56,043 cases recorded in the week of December 3rd to 9th, 2023, compared to 32,035 cases in the previous week. Hospitalizations have also seen an upward trend, with an average of 350 daily admissions, up from 225 the previous week. Similarly, the average number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) cases has increased to nine cases per day, compared to four cases in the previous week.

The Singapore government has specifically identified JN.1, a sublineage of BA.2.86, as the primary contributor to the surge in COVID-19 cases. However, they have clarified that there is no definitive evidence suggesting that BA.2.86 or JN.1 are more contagious or result in more severe illness than other circulating variants.

To handle this situation, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has been working closely with public hospitals to develop contingency plans. These plans include ensuring sufficient manpower and postponing non-urgent elective procedures to free up beds for critical cases that require immediate medical attention. Additionally, hospitals are implementing alternative care models, such as Transitional Care Facilities and Mobile Inpatient Care, to accommodate the increasing demand for healthcare services.

Hall 10 will offer medical attention to over 80 COVID-19 patients who are in stable condition and do not need intensive care in a hospital setting.

In Singapore, individuals who are showing signs of acute respiratory infection (ARI) are encouraged to remain at home until their symptoms subside and avoid coming into contact with others. If interaction is necessary, they should wear masks, limit social interactions, and stay away from crowded places. The Ministry of Health (MOH) emphasizes the significance of wearing masks in crowded areas, especially indoors and when interacting with susceptible individuals, even if they do not display any symptoms.
