As revelers turned up in hundreds to bring on the holiday festivities with Macy's yearly Thanksgiving Day Parade, the show turned out to be a total dud as stormy weather turned the annual revelry into a nightmare.
The blustering wind not only left the Spider-Man partially deflated but also several others injured as the life-size balloons trampled over some, leaving them with injuries and fractures.
Parade volunteer Keri O’Connell, 39, was injured when a golf cart riding with the 67-foot-long “Toy Story” hero ran over her right foot around 10:30 a.m. at W. 75th St. and Central Park West.
“We were having the most fantastic time. Everything was wonderful. All of a sudden I was on the ground in intense pain,” said O’Connell, of Franklin Square, L.I., who was holding a line attached to the balloon along with her aunt, Cathy Zanella, 48.
“The pair of accidents are far from the first during the parade viewed by 3.5 million spectators. In 2005 an M&M balloon knocked over a streetlight and injured two sisters. A Cat in the Hat balloon struck a streetlamp in 1997, dislodging debris that knocked a woman into a coma,” wrote the New York Daily News.
