Kia has made a strong impression in India with its Seltos and Sonet models. Recognizing the potential in the compact SUV segment, Kia is introducing the Syros, which is positioned above the Sonet. The Syros is built on the Sonet's reinforced platform, but with a distinct design. It features a taller stance, a bold new "Tiger Face" grille, and large headlamps integrated into the bumpers, giving it a unique look. The Syros also includes a contrasting skid plate, enhancing its SUV character.

The vehicle has a distinctive, boxy appearance with well-proportioned 17-inch alloy wheels. The contrasting black cladding along the sides complements the design nicely. Kia has incorporated flush-fit door handles, a popular styling trend. The extended wheelbase, 50mm longer than the Sonet, provides more interior space. The quirky rear design features large taillights that wrap around the back, reminiscent of classic American SUVs, with a secondary light panel on the bumper housing the indicators and reverse lights. The interior follows a unique approach, with a wide and spacious dashboard. The large 30-inch Trinity infotainment system serves as the primary instrument panel, eliminating any separation between the two.

The dashboard features a customizable ambient light panel with 64 different color options. The toggle buttons in the center console are user-friendly and convenient. The highlight is the Double D Cut steering wheel, which integrates controls for driving and traction modes. There is also a large wireless charging pad within easy reach ahead of the gear shifter. The seats are spacious and comfortable, and they are electrically adjustable.

The real standout feature is the rear seating area. The rear seats can accommodate three passengers and offer adjustability for reach and recline, allowing for personalized comfort. Additionally, the Kia Syros provides ventilated seats and blinds in the rear. The massive panoramic sunroof enhances the sense of spaciousness, which is abundant throughout the vehicle. The boot offers excellent capacity, with a minimum space of 390 liters that can be expanded to 465 liters by moving the seats forward.

The car is powered by a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that generates 118 horsepower and 172 Newton-meters of torque. It can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The manual version has a fuel efficiency of 18.2 kilometers per liter, while the automatic version has a slightly lower efficiency of 17.6 kilometers per liter. The upcoming diesel variant will have a 1.5-liter engine producing 114 horsepower and 250 Newton-meters of torque. This diesel engine can be coupled with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, with fuel efficiency ratings of 20.7 kilometers per liter and 17.6 kilometers per liter, respectively. The test drive of the diesel automatic variant revealed impressive noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) characteristics, with the engine barely audible inside the cabin. The car has a decent amount of power delivery, starting from low engine speeds, and it cruises comfortably at 100 kilometers per hour. The automatic transmission is also responsive and provides smooth gear changes.

The Syros may not excel in sportiness, but it provides a comfortable driving experience and excellent fuel efficiency. The steering system is on par with other Korean vehicles, being light and making the car easy to navigate through tight spaces. The 360-degree cameras further assist with parking. While the steering may not offer the most precise feedback at higher speeds, it is adequate for a vehicle in this class.

The Syros handles rough road conditions well, gliding smoothly and with minimal noise. However, when encountering sudden potholes, the suspension tends to bottom out, resulting in a thud. Around corners, the tall vehicle remains well-composed, with minimal body roll. The suspension is well-tuned to provide a comfortable ride for passengers. Kia is expected to price the Syros aggressively, with base variants costing less than Rs 10 lakh, and top variants around Rs 18 lakh, making it an excellent value proposition. The Syros offers a spacious SUV with a variety of safety features, including ADAS, as well as luxury features like a Harman Kardon audio system and a panoramic sunroof. Additionally, it features ventilated seats, further enhancing the overall comfort. Given the pricing, the Syros is poised to be a very appealing option for customers.
