The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed India's significance as a "big and great country," stating it would be a "pity" not to have time to visit. He acknowledged the importance of seeing the Indian people, as they hold the key to the country and its prime minister. The president expressed his strong desire to find a way to have India on Ukraine's side, and said he would be happy to visit India as soon as the Indian government and prime minister are ready to meet him. The president suggested that India could play a crucial diplomatic role in resolving the ongoing war. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed that both Ukraine and Russia should engage in immediate negotiations to end the war, and that India is prepared to play an active part in restoring peace in the region.

India has been on the side of peace since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022, and the Prime Minister expressed a desire to personally contribute to a peaceful resolution of the crisis. The Prime Minister stated that India is not neutral, and has chosen the side of peace since the country comes from the land of Buddha, where there is no place for war. He also mentioned that India comes from the land of Mahatma Gandhi, who gave a message of peace to the world. The Prime Minister's visit to Ukraine, the first by an Indian Prime Minister since its independence in 1991, came six weeks after he held talks with the Russian President.
