The CBI arrested the former Air Force Chief SP Tyagi in connection with alleged bribery in the VVIP chopper deal.
The ex-air chief has been repeatedly questioned on the deal with AgustaWestland, in which kickbacks were allegedly paid to Indian politicians and officials to influence the contract for a dozen VVIP choppers.
The investigators in Italy and India accused the retired Air Marshal Tyagi of helping AgustaWestland win the Rs. 3,600 crore chopper deal by altering specifications at the instance of his cousins.
The CBI said that, “They were arrested on the allegations of who accepted illegal gratification for exercising influence through corrupt or illegal means.”
Investigations revealed that, in 2004, the Tyagis entered into a consultancy deal with middlemen, when Air Marshal Tyagi's cousins were certain that SP Tyagi would be the next air force chief and thus in a position to influence the deal.
