According to a new report, Arizona ranks poor for children in need, being close to the worst place in the country. Factors ranging from child mistreatment to deficient in insurance were studied by the financial website WalletHub. The report, which clubbed all the factors together, found only Mississippi and Washington, D.C., scored lower.
The Children’s Action Alliance executive director Dana Naimark said that the report is in line with the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s latest numbers. The Annie E. Casey Foundation evaluates childhood wellbeing annually state-by state.
“None of these rankings are a surprise,” she said. “I wish I could say they were.”
Naimark said many findings are associated with poverty. They include reports of abuse and neglect including children in foster care. According to her, until the poverty issues are addressed, the state will continue to show a poor performance in child welfare.
WalletHub report
According to the WalletHub report, approximately 27% children live below the poverty line in households, while Arizona ranks number 44 in the nation. Number one is the best according to evaluation. The report also reveals that the food-insecurity ranking is 28%, ranking Arizona no. 46 in the nation.
