Tom Hanks starrer 'Captain Phillips', the upcoming biopic on Captain Richard Phillips, the main hostage in MV Maersk Alabama hijacking in 2009, will open in New York Film Festival to be held in September this year.

The announcement was made by the festival organizers on Monday.

Chair Kent Jones, NYFF Director of Programming and Selection Committee,  tagging the movie as "a riveting experience" expressed joy to showcase the movie in front of the NYFF guests.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, the biopic is based on the real-life incident of the 2009 hijacking of the US cargo ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates, the first American cargo ship to be comandeered in 200 years. Captain Richard Phillips was kidnapped and released on the same year.
