The BCCI is preparing the player retention guidelines for the upcoming IPL mega auction, and franchises have sought an increase in the number of retentions allowed. While opinions among the 10 teams vary, most have asked for more player retention than the previous limit of 4 per squad. The final decision will be made later this month after a meeting with team owners. The IPL's Chief Operating Officer, Hemang Amin, has reportedly discussed the retention policy and salary caps for the next three years with franchise CEOs. The 2025 IPL auction will be a chance for teams to reshape their rosters, while the top teams aim to hold on to their star players.

The current bidding process lacks a crucial rule that was not enforced in 2021. Reports indicate that most teams have requested between five to seven player retention, while one team has proposed eight. Conversely, some teams have expressed opposition to the retention policy altogether. There have also been discussions about eliminating retentions entirely and only implementing the Right to Match (RTM) rule. Conversations have taken place regarding the Impact Player role, with media rights owners approving of it, but the playing and coaching staff expressing reservations. The BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the time being.
