BSNL Launches Internet Telephony Service, Enables Making Calls Without SIM

State-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) on Wednesday unveiled the country's introductory internet telephony service that will let users dial any telephone number in India through its mobile app.
BSNL customers will be capable to make calls using the company's mobile app named "Wings" to any contact around the country. Earlier, calls through phone on mobile apps were possible within users of a specific app and not on telephone numbers.
"In the present competitive environment, increase in market share by BSNL is laudable. I congratulate BSNL management for internet telephony which will enable consumers to make calls without SIM," Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said after inaugurating the service.
Through this introductory service, BSNL users will be able to make calls on any network around the country even by using BSNL wi-fi or else any other service provider.
The Telecom Commission, the highest-decision making body of the Department of Telecom, had permitted companies who hold a valid telecom license, to render app-based calling service even on weak wi-fi connections.
The service provider will be needed to abide by with all the interception and monitoring related necessitates, and calls will be charged by telecom operators and all rules accompanying to regular voice calls will be applicable to them.
Registration for the service will start this week and the services will be activated July 25 onwards.
