Let's be honest: When I browse recipes online, I'm often disappointed. Many people want ingredients that are too expensive or difficult to obtain. In today's health-conscious world, finding delicious fruits and vegetables is of utmost importance. Avocados have taken the internet by storm in India, but not everyone has easy access to them. But don't worry, just because avocados are out of reach doesn't mean local produce lacks flavor or nutrients. If you often encounter this situation, you are not alone. Luckily, nutritionist Deepshika Jain is here to help. He recently uploaded a video to his Instagram page in which he offers a digital exchange for hard-to-find Western ingredients. “Here are some alternatives that are readily available, healthy and delicious. “I used lettuce, but you can substitute kale or other cruciferous vegetables,” she wrote.

Kale and Cabbage: Known for its bright green color and crunchy texture, kale is becoming increasingly popular due to its many health benefits. However, they are expensive and not easily available everywhere. Introducing an equally nutritious and more affordable vegetable: cabbage. Kale and cabbage are both members of the cruciferous family and have similar health benefits.

From avocado to coconut: Avocados are known for their creamy texture and healthy fats, which is why they are popular in salads and smoothies. However, if avocado isn't within reach, coconut is a great substitute. Both are high in fat, potassium and fiber and have similar health benefits. Coconut has a sweet and nutty flavor that can add a tropical touch to your dishes.

From olive oil to Ghee: Olive oil is often touted as a healthier option than other cooking oils. However, if you are looking for a desi alternative, you should consider Gay. Ghee is made from clarified butter and has been used in Indian cuisine for centuries. It is known for its rich flavor and countless health benefits.

Quinoa and Jowar/Rajgira Puffs: The high protein content and nutty taste of quinoa make it a popular choice for the health conscious. However, if quinoa is not easily available or is too expensive, consider jowar puffs or rajira puffs. Jowar puffs and rajgira puffs have almost the same nutrients but are twice as rich in fiber as quinoa, making them a healthier and cheaper alternative.

Blueberries and Jamon: Blueberries are known for their antioxidant properties and sweet and sour taste. However, if blueberries are too expensive or out of season, consider jamun. Jamon, also called Indian blackberry, is a fruit native to India known for its deep purple color and unique taste. Ham is rich in antioxidants and much cheaper than blueberries, making it a good antioxidant replacement.
