Analysis
Whistle starts on a slow note and the first half an hour goes on a slow pace. The film picks up momentum after Rayappan's character is introduced. The football episodes and the cute love story are the added strengths. The interval episodes of Whistle make the film interesting. Though the entire first half sounds predictable, top-class narration and outstanding performance from Vijay makes the film passable and Whistle first half ends on a decent note. The production values and the cinematography have been top-notch.
The second half of Whistle looks racy and is laced with all the commercial ingredients. The emotional drama is the film's major USP and the songs, performances, grand production values and climax episodes take the film to the next level. On the flipside, some of the episodes are dragged and the runtime is sure a barrier. The climax episodes with the football match elevate the film well and make Whistle end up on a decent note. On the whole, the second half of Whistle is the major highlight of the film.
Performance
Vijay excelled in three different roles as Rayappan, Micheal and Bigil in the movie. The actor shined with perfection and is a treat to watch. His fans will be left delighted and Whistle makes it a perfect watch for them. Nayanthara looks perfect and apt in the limited role and she essays the assignment with perfection. Vivek has a decent role and he delivered out his best. Jackie Shroff is one of the major highlights of the film and Kathir, Yogi Babu have been decent. All the other actors performed well in their limited assignments.
Whistle has a lean plot which has nothing much exciting. The screenplay and the dialogues are layered, laced with all the commercial elements. Atlee delivered out his best and his narration is the film's major highlight. He made sure that the film is high throughout and did not miss anything in this sports drama. The music and the background score are a huge support for the film. The production values are lavish enough and the cinematography work excels. Atlee has been decent in his work.
Final Word
Ilayathalapathy Vijay is back with one more commercial drama Whistle which appeals big to his fans. The film makes a decent one time watch.
