SCR inducts first woman locomotive driver

Ms. Satyavathi, who successfully underwent special training for driving MMTS trains earlier this year, was inducted as the first locomotive driver on the International Women’s Day on Thursday.

After independently running the Matrubhoomi Ladies Special train from Falaknuma to Lingampally on the first day, she said her aim is to drive the Rajadhani Express some day in future.

Satyavathi, who first joined as assistant locomotive pilot in Bangalore in 1999, was transferred to the Secunderabad division and promoted as locomotive pilot in 2005 in the Goods section. She underwent training as locomotive pilot and was qualified to run the MMTS trains.

Satyavathi said she felt very happy to take over as an independent MMTS locomotive driver and vowed to discharge her duties with greater responsibility. “I am happy everyone is supporting me. I find this as a bigger responsibility and will do my duty with utmost devotion,” she said
Meanwhile, SCR authorities said they wanted to induct more women as locomotive pilots in the near future. “Like in the RTC, women will play prominent roles in the Railways too in future and this is only a beginning,” said an official. (J)
