Mourning kins assembled at a makeshift morgue where the dead bodies of tourists killed in Italian coach accident were kept. At least 39 mean, women and children are believed to have died on the ghastly bus crash that had 50 passengers on board.

The speeding bus lost control, crashed into other cars in the highway, darted through a guardrail and dived straightway into a 100ft  deep ravine, last night.

Those killed were a group of close knit family and friends who were out on a holiday. Police have lodged a case of multiple manslaughter.

One of the firefighters who narrated the awful scenes from the accident spot. Emilio Matarazzo said: 'I heard children weeping and crying out inside the carcass of the coach. That was what made my blood run cold.'

Rescuers cut through the mangled bus with electric saws to unearth bodies, dead and alive.

Nearly five kids were pulled to safety so far, but other, including the driver, are believed to be dead.

Relatives of the dead, who heard the news on TV, mobbed at a makeshift funeral parlour set up within hours of the crash.

Mario Terracciano lost his mother, grandfather, uncle and aunt to this accident. He said: ‘I heard that they came from Telese Terme, I knew right away that it was them. I had spoken to my mother only a few hours before. She had been worried about my lunch. My uncle and aunt were simple people who just wanted a few hours of serenity.’

Prime Minister Enrico Letta said: 'It's truly truly terrible. A very sad day, words are inadequate.'

The bus lost its control near the town of Monteforte Irpino in Irpinia,  about 60 kilometers inland from Naples and about 250 kilometers to the south of Rome.

Ten people including six children have been seriously wounded.

Additionally, 14 people from six cars hit by the bus, suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital.
